 La Scala offre uno spettacolo unico al mondo quando, le sere del 24 e 25 luglio, in occasione della festa del Santo Patrono S. Giacomo diventa "illuminata". Seguendo una tradizione secolare che ha origine nel '600 eche trovò la sua massima espressione nell'800 con il famoso Padre Benedetto Papale, migliaia di coppi, preparati e colorati rigorosamente a mano, secondo un'antica maestria che si tramanda di padre in figlio, vengono posti lungo tutti i gradini per formare un unico meraviglioso disegno. In fondo al coppo viene posta della sabbia e, sopra, una ra (da qui la denominazione di "luminaria"), piccolo recipiente in terracotta, dotata di apposito stoppino in cotone, che al momento giusto viene riempita d'olio di oliva mediante la stagnata (recipiente di latta con un lungobecco).

Già dalla mattina del 23 luglio la Scala sioffre allo sguardo curioso dei cittadini e dei visitatori che cercheranno il punto migliore sulla Piazza Municipio o sulla Via P.pe Amedeo per ammirare il disegno nella sua interezza; ma ancor più quando, all'ora stabilita del 24 luglio, centinaiadi persone, oggi munite di un'asticina in legno al posto dell'antico buceddu (fuscello secco di pianta selvatica), affolleranno laScala accendendo le singole lumere, affinchè nel giro di pochi minuti una luce fiammeggiante illumini i coppi e offrauno spettacolo di un fascino indescrivibile.

  Nel buio della Scala, il chiarore dei coppi è un continuo crescendo di luci tremolanti in una magica notte, fino allo spegnimento naturale ad esaurimento dell'olio. Nella stessa notte tra il 24 e 25 luglio, gli addetti ai lavori provvedono con grande destrezzaa riposizionare velocemente i coppi per allestire un nuovo disegno per il giorno dopo.

 Generalmente tali disegni sono ispirati a temi riguardanti la città e il Santo Patrono. La Scala torna ad essere illuminata il 14 e 15 agosto in occasione della solennità di Maria SS. del Ponte unitamente ad altre due, seppure di minore imponenza, limitrofe all'omonima Chiesa.

 THE ILLUMINATED SCALA  - July 24-25  - August 14-15

 The Scala offers a uniqueshow on the nights ofthe July 24^th and 25^th when it is illuminated in celebration of Saint James, the town�s Patron Saint.

 Following a secular tradition that originated in 1600, which found its highest expression with the then well known Father Benedetto Papale, thousands of cups rigorously prepared and hand colored according to a old method passed down from father to son, are arranged throughout the steps to form a wonderful design. The bottom of thecups is filled with sand andthen a lumera (oil lamp) [derived from the word luminaria  (bonfires)], a little terracotta bowl with a cotton wick which is filled with olive oil at aprecise moment through the stagnara (a tin with a long spout).

 Early in the morning on July 23^rd, the Scala lends itself to the curious looks of local folks and visitors alike who search for the best vantage point by the Town Hall�s Piazza or in the Via Prince Amedeo in order to admire the design in its entirety; and even more when at a planned hour on July 24^th, hundreds of people holding little wooden sticks, as opposed to the once used buceddu  (dried twig of a wild plant), crowd the Scala each lighting one lamp, so that in a matter of a few minutes a blazing light illuminates the cups offeringan exciting show.

 In the darkness of the Scala, the gleaming cups are an ongoing crescendo of flickering light through a magic night that continues until the oil slowly runs out.  In the same night between the24^th andthe 25^{th ,} skilled workmen reposition the cups to create a new designfor the comingday. In general, these designs are inspired by themes related to the town and its Holy Patron.

 TheScala is illuminated again on August 14^th and15^th for the solemnity of Maria SS. del Ponte (the Bridge�s Very Holy Mary) as well as two smaller sets of stair belonging to the neighboring church named after Her.
